Defending Your Faith or Living it?

...always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 1 Peter 3:15b-16 TNIV
...always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 1 Peter 3:15b-16 NASB
I've heard this verse quoted so many time from various stages or other venues, but in most cases the last part gets left out. Or the version is used with "defense" & never get past defending our faith. What does gentleness & respect have to do with defending my faith anyway?
For me is is giving up my need to me more right than everyone else. My need to be right is NOT more important than the example I give with "gentleness and respect". If you read the rest of the thought in verse 16 it goes on further to say, ACTIONS speak louder than words. This is something I need to write down so that I can remember to live it out daily.
This is one of my favorite quotes on the subject: "Preach the Gospel Always: When Necessary, Use Words" St. Francis of Assisi
By the way I use YouVersion.com for my online and mobile device reading and study of the Bible. Thanks LifeChurch.tv for sharing freely such a cool tool!
